Counseling is the foundation to my practice. Educational background included a Ph.D. in
psychology, complimented by Masters work in Mental Health Counselor. My dissertation
focused on Alcohol Abuse, Personality Disorder, and Attachment Theory. I am also Nationally
Board Certified in Abuse and Crisis Therapy. Counseling services include individual, family
and couple counseling. My philosophy is to meet the client where they are at and build a path
to begin the healing. Christian Centered counseling is also offered at Family Counseling &
Mediation.
Most recently I have been certified to utilize a measurement that measures temperament and
not behavior. This speaks to how each person was uniquely made and through understanding
and meeting those needs life is drastically improve, called the A.P.S.
The Arno Profile System (A.P.S.) used in this temperament analysis has been developed and
tested by Dr.'s Phyllis and Richard Arno since 1983 for the purpose of increasing the
effectiveness of the therapeutic procedure in office and online counseling. Over the past
eighteen years, multiple testing and research have produced an accuracy rate of
approximately 93% in identifying an individuals correct temperament.
The A.P.S. identifies three separate human interactions and identifies each one in two different
ways:
Inclusion (social orientation and intellectual energies)
Control (desire to make decisions and to take on responsibilities)
Affection (interaction in deep relationships)
Each one of these areas has an Expressed and Wanted/Responsive Scale:
Expressed: What we say we want Wanted: What we want / how we respond
Prepare and Enrich is an inventory for couple and/or marital counseling. The
instrument uses different elements for specific application such as premarital, premarital with
children (due to a re-marriage), premarital cohabiting, marital enrichment, marital later years.
This inventory was recently cited in a longitudinal study for predicting with above ninety (90%)
percent accuracy those marriages cited for possible abuse, divorce or separation.
Areas of counseling include marital, premarital, addiction, abuse, PTSD, self-esteem, and
those suffering from depression/anxiety. I use the DSM-IV when necessary for making clinical
diagnosis, and work in a collaborative fashion with your primary care physcian if medications
are deemed necessary.
Other Instruments which I have at my disposal to use in the office include the
following; MMPI- 2 , MCMI-III, Prepare and Enrich and MBTI
The MMPI-2 is properly titled the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. The MMPI-2
remains the most widely used and widely researched test of adult psychopathology. Used by
clinicians to assist with the diagnosis of mental disorders and the selection of appropriate
treatment methods, the MMPI-2 test continues to help meet the assessment needs of mental
health professionals in an ever-changing environment. The MMPI-2 test’s contemporary
normative sample and extensive research base help make it the gold standard in assessment
for a wide variety of settings. The test can be used to help:
- Assess major symptoms of social and personal maladjustment.
- Identify suitable candidates for high-risk public safety positions.
- Support classification, treatment, and management decisions in criminal justice and
correctional settings.
- Give a strong empirical foundation for a clinician's expert testimony.
- Assess medical patients and design effective treatment strategies, including chronic pain
management.
- Evaluate participants in substance abuse programs and select appropriate treatment
approaches.
- Support college and career counseling recommendations.
- Provide valuable insight for marriage and family counseling.
The MCMI-III is properly titled the Milon Cultural Multiaxial Inventory 3rd edition. This
instrument is used to assist in diagnosis of disorders on Axis I and II, such as depression and
substance abuse.
The MBTI, Myers Briggs Type Inventory, is used to measure an individuals preferences on
living life. This instrument is used to help an individual better understand themselves and
those around them. The individual will also learn how communicate more effectively by
understanding how others take in information from the world around them.
